History of New Balance Numeric

1906: The Birth of New Balance

New Balance was founded in Boston in 1906 by English immigrant William J. Riley. Specialising in arch support. Riley coined the name "New Balance" after observing chickens in his yard and identifying 3 points of contact in the foot. Is it said that he kept a chicken foot on his office desk to model designs.

1960: Track Experts

New Balanced continued to sell arch support until 1960 when they first designed and manufactured the "Trackster". The Trackster was the first shoe to come in a variety of lengths to support the sports user and gained popularity through YMCA programs in which it became the unofficial shoe for track. This shoe became the chosen team shoe for the major College track teams across the USA.

1976: A Naming Revolution

New Balance launches the 320, the first shoe to feature the now famous 'N' logo. New Balance began using unique model numbers instead of names for their products to ensure customers viewed each model as equal yet designed for specific purposes. The model number indicates the type of shoe, its intended activity, and whether it was built for stability, speed, or other features. Sales of the New Balance 320 soared after it was voted the number one running shoe on the market by Runner's World magazine.

2013: New Balance Numeric Launch

New Balance went from strength to strength in the sports shoe market and in 2013 they decided to launch into the skate market and developed the sub brand “New Balance Numeric”. New Balance launched the Numeric brand with a skate team featuring Levi Brown, Tom Karangelov, Arto Saari, Jamie Foy, PJ Ladd, Justin Henry and Andrew Reynolds.

Now:

New Balance Numeric continues to grow in popularity within the skate community featuring renowned shoes such as the NB Numeric 440, NB Numeric 272, and more.
